taking pieces

if any of the major pieces 'crash into' a piece from the other side while moving along a diagonal or line,

that is known as 'taking' that piece, that piece is removed from the board, and the piece being moved is

	placed on that square

check

If a piece has a line of attack on the other side's king, that is known as 'check' against the other side.

In this case, the next move from the opposing side must cancel the situation of check, by moving another

piece in the way of the line of attack or moving the king.

If there is no possible move that would cancel the situation of check, that is known as 'checkmate', and the

game is won by that side (the one holding checkmate against the other side)

White makes the first move

moves are then made in alternating turns

if a pawn reaches the other side of the board it becomes a queen peice

setup of the pieces

back line of the board

pawn pawn pawn pawn pawn pawn pawn pawn

rook night bishop queen king bishop night rook

[check order of king/queen, one goes on the same color square as the piece itself]

'castle' move

if the pieces between the king and a rook have been moved away, the positions of the king

and a rook may be exchanged in a single move, the the pieces being placed in the blank

spaces between their previous two locations (closest to the center of the board)

this move is not available if either of the pieces has already moved during that game.

a player may grasp a piece, move it, change their mind, and return it to its original

position in order to chose a different move. The move is considered to have been made

once the player has released hold of the piece

if the number of pieces remaining on the board is small, it may be the case that it is not

possible to achieve a checkmate. in this case the game is declared a tie etc.
